Nostalgia albums of nostalgia albums holy shit. If Hot Fuss wasnt playing my
mom was playing this in her Honda Odyssey on the way to take us to school. The first notes
for the title-bearing “The Suburbs” sends me back to my own suburban memories. I think even
without my own sentimental attachment the tone of this album captures the nostalgia of middle
class suburbia. Listening to it now 15 years later in my 20s (I dont feel old enough to say 15
years later but that's right T.T) it has taken on all new meanings to me. What was easily
background music, a soundtrack to car rides and childhood, now stirs recollection and a kind of
tragic feeling now that I can take in the lyrics with the melody. It’s no longer just music my
mother listened to, its music I listen to as well, and even though that relationship is strained,
its weird the ways we are connected. I wonder sometimes what she thought listening to this album when
she was younger.
Ready to Start was my number one song listened to last year (2025), a whopping 46 times,
which I’m honestly not surprised that number was higher, but here are my top 5 songs from the album:
★ Ready To Start
★ The Suburbs
★ Modern Man
★ Empty room
★ We Used to Wait
